HISTORY
Early photographs suggest that the Pier Hotel, Douglas Row, (Quay Street) Portree was built circa 1850.and Douglas Row itself may be regarded as one of the “original streets” in Portree village. In these days the harbour was so dense with fishing smacks that it was possible to walk across the harbour without getting your feet wet! Indeed until the advent of trawlers in the 1880’s as many as 800 boats went out from Portree harbour to fish for herring, Today only a handful of boats are indigenous to the area.
